Plus Valley Trek

Plus Valley, tucked away near the Bhira backwaters in Raigad district, is one of the most striking monsoon-only treks in the Sahyadris, named for the way two deep, forested valleys meet and cross each other in the shape of a plus sign when seen from above. The trail drops from the village of Kothimbe down through a narrow, cliff-walled gorge where a seasonal stream has carved a path through moss-covered rock, with thin waterfalls spilling off the ridgeline on either side after every spell of rain. This is a trek built entirely around the monsoon: the valley floor turns a deep, almost unreal green, low clouds drift between the rock walls, and the stream crossings make the descent feel more like an adventure walk than a climb. Because the valley narrows and water levels can rise quickly during heavy rain, the group moves together at a measured pace with guides positioned at every crossing, and the actual depth of the walk into the valley is decided on the day based on water flow and weather.

Highlights

  • The dramatic 'plus'-shaped meeting point of two valleys, a rare geological sight in the Sahyadris
  • Multiple seasonal waterfalls cascading down sheer rock walls into the gorge
  • A narrow, moss-green valley floor with shallow stream crossings underfoot
  • Thick monsoon mist and cloud cover rolling through the ravine
  • Close-up views of the Bhira dam backwaters from the upper ridge

Who is this for?

Suited to fit beginners and monsoon-trek regulars who are comfortable with slippery rock, shallow stream crossings, and a steady climb back out of the valley; not recommended for absolute first-timers with no hill-walking experience or for young children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Plus Valley trek safe during heavy rain?

Trek leaders monitor water levels continuously; if the stream is running high, the group's entry depth into the valley is reduced or the route is altered for safety, even if this means not reaching the deepest section.

How difficult is this trek?

It is graded moderate mainly because of slippery rocks and stream crossings rather than steep climbing, so basic fitness and sure-footedness matter more than trekking experience.

Will there be leeches?

Yes, leeches are common in this valley during peak monsoon; carrying salt or anti-leech socks and tucking trousers into socks is recommended.
