Kothaligad Trek

Kothaligad, also known as Peth Fort, is a compact hill fort near Karjat that has become one of the most popular easy monsoon treks close to Mumbai, thanks to its short approach and a genuinely unique finish: a narrow, ancient rock-cut passage carved through the hillside that trekkers climb through, almost like a natural staircase-tunnel, to reach the summit plateau. The base village of Ambavne sits amid lush paddy fields, and the trail up is a gentle climb through grassy slopes before the terrain turns rocky near the top. Once past the rock-cut steps, the small plateau on top offers wide views over the Ulhas valley, the Bhivpuri and Peth villages below, and on clear monsoon days, a sea of clouds rolling over the surrounding ranges. There are a few old water cisterns and the remains of fort walls to explore, but the real charm of Kothaligad lies in how much reward it offers for relatively little effort, making it an ideal introduction to Sahyadri trekking.

Highlights

  • A narrow rock-cut cave passage that doubles as the final ascent to the summit
  • Lush green paddy fields and grassy slopes around the base village of Ambavne
  • Panoramic views over the Ulhas valley and surrounding Karjat countryside
  • Ancient water cisterns and fort wall remnants on the summit plateau
  • Cloud-covered ridgelines typical of the Karjat monsoon belt

Who is this for?

Ideal for absolute beginners, families, and first-time trekkers, including children above 10 years with basic fitness, since the climb is short and graded easy with only one technical rock-cut section.
