Andharban Jungle Trek
Andharban, literally 'the dark forest', is a long, mostly downhill trail that cuts through one of the densest surviving forest patches in the northern Sahyadris, linking the Pune-side plateau near Bhor to the Bhira backwaters close to Tamhini Ghat. The canopy here is thick enough in places to block out daylight even at noon, and the entire route is laced with small streams, moss-covered rocks, and a handful of waterfalls that only show themselves during and just after the monsoon. Unlike most Sahyadri day treks that involve a hard climb to a fort or summit, Andharban is essentially a long descent of roughly 12-14 km through evolving forest types, from open grassland at the top to thick jungle lower down, before finally opening out near the Bhira backwaters. The reward is less about a single viewpoint and more about the sustained immersion in forest, sound, and water for several hours, making it a favourite among trekkers who enjoy jungle walks over summit-bagging.
Highlights
- A rare, sustained walk through dense, multi-layered forest cover for several hours
- Numerous monsoon streams and small waterfalls crossing the trail
- Visible change in vegetation from open grassland at the start to thick jungle lower down
- Sighting opportunities for forest birds and butterflies unique to this belt
- A scenic finish near the Bhira backwaters after descending out of the tree line
Who is this for?
Best suited for trekkers with reasonable stamina and prior trekking experience, since the trail length (12-14 km) and constant stream crossings demand endurance even though the elevation loss works in your favour; not ideal for absolute beginners or anyone with knee issues on long descents.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this trek considered tough despite being downhill?
The 12-14 km distance, uneven wet terrain, and constant stream crossings make the descent demanding on the knees and require sustained stamina, even without a steep climb.
Are leeches a big concern on this trek?
Yes, this is one of the leech-heaviest trails in the Sahyadris during monsoon; anti-leech socks and salt are strongly recommended.
Do the two ends of the trek connect back to Mumbai directly?
The trek is point-to-point, so the support vehicle is repositioned to the exit point near Bhira in advance to pick up the group after the descent.
